Flanders, New York is home to the Big Duck, a ferrocement building shaped like a duck. It was built in 1931 by Martin Maurer of Riverhead. It was originally used as a duck market, but has since been listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The city is located on the southeast corner of New York State, at the mouth of the Hudson River. While the weather in Flanders is usually mild, it’s coldest in January and February. The climate in Flanders is most pleasant in June, September, and August, while the coldest months are January and February.

Flanders is a census-designated place in the Town of Southampton. Its population was 4,472 at the 2010 census. The community is largely residential, with a number of small residential neighborhoods situated on the bay. Many of these areas are on the water, and they have a long history of summer hotels.

The Big Duck is a famous landmark in Flanders. It is comparable to Le Corbusier’s Villa Savoye outside of Paris. Its design is so distinctive that it has even inspired the architectural term “duck” – a building shaped like a duck that represents service or business. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997.

The town is also home to many vineyards. Most wineries offer tastings for a nominal fee. Some also hold special events and live music. While you’re here, take time to visit the Alex Ferrone Gallery, a gallery that features a collection of contemporary and emerging artists. Afterwards, you can sample some fine wine or a tasty Long Island brew.

Red Creek Pond and Wehrman’s Pond are home to spotted turtles. The area also hosts several major creeks that empty into Flanders Bay. The eastern mud turtle, as well as the eastern hog-nosed snake, have also been observed in the area. The significance of these wetlands has yet to be fully understood.

The Flanders Bay Wetlands area in eastern Long Island is one of the most important wintering areas for waterfowl. Aerial surveys conducted between 1986 and 1996 showed an average of 225 birds in the area. In a peak year, there were 1,240 birds. The most abundant species were American black duck, but lesser numbers included common loon, mallard, and bufflehead.

Motorized vessel use may have adverse effects on fish and wildlife populations. Hence, motorized vessel use should be limited, especially in vegetated wetlands. In addition, alterations to tidal patterns may negatively affect the Flanders Bay Wetlands. Therefore, dredging should be scheduled between September 15 and December 15 in order to minimize the impact on aquatic organisms. If possible, dredged material should be disposed of in an appropriate manner.

The Big Duck, a National Register of Historic Places landmark, still serves as a local tourism center for the East end of Long Island. It is a popular destination for city weekend-trippers. In addition to selling duck souvenirs, it is also home to an exhibit highlighting the history of duck farming on Long Island.
