The Shinnecock tribe number more than 1,400 people. Of these, 662 live on the reservation. The majority of the people are black. In fact, many of them are descendants of slaves. The Shinnecocks also learned to make snowshoes from their northern neighbors. Today, many of the people in Shinnecock still wear traditional clothing but have adapted to modern life. They only wear feathers in their hair on special occasions.

The Shinnecock’s traditional occupation was the whaling industry. Before the arrival of the English, the Shinnecock Indians were a skilled group of sailors. The Shinnecock Inlet is a short cut to the ocean for boats on the north shore of Long Island. Because of this, management of the inlet has been aimed toward keeping the inlet open and the tidal flow of sand from east to west. This has created major beach erosion on the west side of the inlet, a process known as longshore drift.
